Frequently Asked Questions
Tell me more about Pilates
Pilates might be trendy and growing in popularity, but it isn’t new!
It was created in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German who moved to New York and spent his life dedicated to developing this method which we now know as ‘Pilates’.
It works the whole body using low-impact exercises that strengthen your muscles by focusing on posture, alignment, and flexibility.
Joseph Pilates believed in a balanced body and mind stating, “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” His method was built on six key principles which remain the foundation of Pilates today:
- – Concentration: Focusing on each movement for better mind-body connection
- – Control: Performing exercises with precision and avoiding sloppy movements
- – Centering: Using the core as the foundation for all movements
- – Flow: Moving with grace and smooth transitions
- – Precision: Ensuring movements are exact and purposeful
- – Breath: Coordinating breath with movement for optimal performance and relaxation
How will Pilates benefit me?
With a consistent and committed approach, over time, you will see and feel the following benefits from your Pilates classes.
- – Improves core strength and stability
- – Enhances flexibility and joint mobility
- – Promotes better posture and alignment
- – Reduces risk of injury and aids in rehabilitation
- – Encourages mental focus and stress relief
On a personal level, this will differ from individual to individual, however it may mean a return to activities that you thought you could no longer do, the ability to get up and down from a chair or the floor with more ease, or if you’re already active in other sports it could be a performance improvement.
Who is Pilates suitable for?
How often should I attend classes?
As with most things, commitment and consistency are what makes the greatest difference. We all have varying budgets, schedules and time constraints, so these all need to be considered. Consistently turning up, however, for just one class per week and then perhaps adding in some home exercises on the mat is a great start.
Ideally though, 2+ classes per week will provide immense benefits and allow your body to adapt to the movements, build foundational strength and improve flexibility. We encourage Pilates to be just one aspect to your healthy and active lifestyle, so if you are also regularly walking, playing sport or spending time in the garden, regular Pilates practice will help you to do these activities better and with more ease.
What equipment will I use in a class?
In a Private/Studio Class, the equipment used will be tailored to your needs, particularly for rehabilitation or specific movement goals. This may include using the Trapeze Table (Cadillac), Wunda Chair, Spine Corrector, Reformer and other small props such as foam rollers, resistance bands or small weights.
I am new to the studio, where do I start?
Head to our Pricing page for information on getting you started. We can’t wait to welcome you to the studio!
What do I bring/wear to a class?
Wear something comfy to move freely in. All you need to bring is a water bottle and some Pilates/grippy socks which we wear in the Pilates studio for safety and hygiene reasons. If you do not have a pair, a variety of fun colours and sizes are available to purchase at the studio for $15.
When should I arrive and where do I park?
Please arrive 5 minutes prior to class starting. There is plenty of parking on the street or feel free to come down the driveway and find a park on the concrete. You will see the small studio at the front of the property on the left hand side.
What are your cancellation terms?
We respectfully ask that if you need to cancel or reschedule any classes you are booked into, that you do so 12 hours prior to the class start time, to avoid forfeiting your session. As spaces in the class are limited this allows others the chance to book in and attend.
Can I attend pre/post natal?
Yes, this is a great time to be doing Pilates! Because of our small group classes, we can modify to suit and provide props to help you feel more comfortable. If you are returning after having your baby, please wait until you have medical clearance until you start exercise.
I have an injury, can I still attend classes?
I have osteopenia/osteoporosis, are the classes suitable?
